POTA of Opportunity

This evening I had the opportunity to sneak in an activation after work while running some errands with my family. We were near my “home” park which is the Presidio of San Francisco National Historic Site (K-7889).

The Mountaintopper at sea level.

There are numerous places to activate from within the boundaries of the Presidio, but my “go to” spot for weekday evenings is the East Beach picnic area. It’s near the Bay water for good RF and by the time I get there it is rare for anybody else to be using the picnic tables.

My goal was to complete the activation in under one hour. I setup the tripod vertical with six 17ft radials fanned out to the east. The Mountaintopper MTR-4B was the radio of choice this evening and I keyed the radio with the N0SA paddles from CW Morse.

20 meter contacts from Coast-to-Coast

Thirty minutes of on-air time netted 20 QSOs from coast to coast and from British Columbia to the Gulf of Mexico. Not bad for a mere five watts! Many thanks to all the hunters that called me this evening.
