K-7889 Quick Take

Amateur radio operations from K-7889 for me is as much about just getting on the air as it is about adding to POTA tallies.

When you work from home and your QTH features S9+ man-made noise levels then a little POTA operation is a great way to get out of the house and make some CW contacts.

Conditions were a challenge today with the geomagnetic field being “unsettled” and the QSB was fast. Lots of calling and when you got a bite you have to work ‘em quick before the band fades back into oblivion.

Interestingly, I did get spotted twice by S53A RBN station in Slovenia this afternoon and I heard a French station working another POTA activation. Unfortunately, I got no European DX myself, maybe next time.

I worked 12 stations in about an hour with contacts as far east as South Carolina and New York, and also worked Paul NL7V again in North Pole, Alaska.

Gear Note: I picked up a pack of silicone rubber protective BNC connector caps from Amazon for a few bucks. They aren’t as “tacti-cool”as the metal caps with the little retaining chain, but they are inexpensive and do a good job of preventing damage to unused BNC connectors.

Get yours here: 5-pack Uxcell Silicone protective caps.

    Hulloo from San Francisco!
Gosh do I know what you mean about the man made noise in town. The two nights before your Presidio POTA the kids and I were out camping at K-1178 doing a POTA. Signals in general were so much nicer out there!

Down at East Beach the QRM is greatly reduced, but still I can hear the occasional bus or EV go by on Mason Street. Mt. Tam is wonderful! While I enjoy hiking and activating there, I’ve never camped on the mountain. I grew up at the base of Tam so I guess I consider it more of a day-use playground 😉
