Quick Lunchtime Hunt

Working from home means that when the weather is clear, as it was today, I can walk a couple of blocks to my local city park and try to make a few contacts on the radio during my lunch break.

In the middle of January it’s nice to get a little sunshine on your face and fresh air in your lungs. Except for an old man doing Tai-Chi and some people playing tennis, the park is mostly unused this time of day.

I set up the Gabil GRA-7350T on the fence rail behind the bleachers at one of the baseball diamonds. I could tune this to an acceptable SWR on 20m, 17m, and 15m without using the built in tuner on the KH1.

There was “S4” man-made noise on 20 meters, but that’s also where I could hear stations today. Fifteen meters (21MHz) is much quieter here, but none of POTA spots were strong enough to work, I tried.

Three contacts in the log was enough to make the outing a success before heading back to work.

What was the source of the S4 noise? I’ve been having largish AM broadcast interference lately.

I imagine it was emanating from the nearby rec center and pool complex. I suppose it could also be coming from the houses across Anza Boulevard. Those are closest potential sources.

Like you, I’ve been enjoying littel portable POTA hunting sessions with my KH1 as of late. That little radio makes sessions like this so quick and easy, it’s effortless (well, save the hunting part!).

I do like the idea of that Gabil antenna!

    Cheers,
